Hi Sirleen,
I have a very large D. speciosum that I have had up in a Eucalyptus tree in the San Diego, CA area for ten years. I do not know what conditions it receives in its native habitat, but I water and feed it weekly throughout the winter and it blooms profusely in April. By virtue of being in the crotch of a tree, it has very good drainage. I have some other smaller ones that do not bloom as well, but they receive more shade. The large one is in a very bright spot. Good Luck!
Bruce

Greetings Orchid Experts, I have a largish Den speciosum that I've been growing for 5 years and this year I notice it's getting bumps on the upper nodes of the canes which I think may become spikes if I'm lucky!! My question for you is about watering. I live on the Central California coast and it's fall here, which means cool nights, warm days and no rain yet. Some places I've read say NO water and no fertilizer starting November 1st until the spring and other places say SOME water and no fertilizer. All recommend a bright spot for this rest period. What are your opinions. I'd really like to get this plant to bloom!! Many thanks, Sirleen
