Not being from Florida, I have absolutely no idea what orchid this story is about.
You need to collect US postage stamps. ;-) The plant in question is Cyrtopodium punctatum, also known as the cow-horn orchid. Both common names are from the shape of the pseudobulbs. Cyrtopodium is featured on a postage stamp from the sheet honoring the South Florida Wetlands. The information that comes with the sheet lists the scientific names of all the depicted species. Vanilla planifolia is also in the painting.
