Having worked with journalists for many years, I agree that those who feed information about orchid species to the media should provide the scientific names. Of course, most journalists are neither scientists nor orchidophiles, so their lack of knowledge on orchids is understandable. Some tolerance on our part might be appropriate. When I quote news stories on the OGD, if I can find the time, I indicate [between brackets] the scientific name of a species mentioned in an article if only the popular name is mentioned. Colin also wrote : "I have absolutely no idea what orchid this story is about." Actually, in the post to the OGD [quoting the article published in Bonita Daily News and The Banner / Bonita Springs, Florida (US)] the scientific name of the "cigar orchid' was mentioned : "A project that is seven years in the making at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge aims to save the cigar orchid, scientific name Cyrtopodium punctatum, and several other kinds of rare orchids."
