As I recall. the advice was to use fresh lumps, and fill the pot around the 
roots, but not to compress the manure tightly. It then needs to be watered 
every day, and fed as one would with other mixes. I have used this technic for 
cymbidiums and zygopetalums and it works fine, but in a two year period I 
personally saw no advantage in terms of growth or flowering. There was no odor, 
but 
it did require watering every day.
