As I recall. the advice was to use fresh lumps, and fill the pot around the roots, but not to compress the manure tightly. It then needs to be watered every day, and fed as one would with other mixes. I have used this technic for cymbidiums and zygopetalums and it works fine, but in a two year period I personally saw no advantage in terms of growth or flowering. There was no odor, but it did require watering every day.
