I can attest to the success of horse manure as orchid fertilizer - check out the before and after photos of the Oncidium sphacelatum...
http://www.vision.net.au/~nicvdb/results%20photo.htm After hearing that some orchid growers had success using horse manure, I decided to give it a try. I had paid only $5 for the sphacelatum several years ago, so I figured if the experiment were a failure, I wouldn't have lost much. After the plant flowered with 7 spikes, I added horse manure. The very next year the plant had doubled in size and carried 22 spikes. If you have access to fresh horse manure, try it on a few orchids at first and see if you get similar results. Good luck and good growing!
