In response to Nancy's inquiry of

"Perhaps someone as a theory about this: My Clowesetum is just beginning to
bloom.

It is a cross between Clowesia warczswiczii x Ctsm.

expansum. According to any information I've been able to unearth, the
Clowesia is fall-blooming, and the Catasetum usually flowers in
Spring/Summer.

Well, since it is flowering right now (winter, certainly), I am stumped as
to how to 'guess' when other crosses in this group of Catasetinae might
flower.

Can anyone point me towards a reference, or offer a speculation as to how
these things work?

It is a quite beautiful flower, in any case.

Regards - Nancy

p.s. then again, Cyc. warczswiczii is allegedly fall-blooming, but insists
on flowering each February..."

I have a Cat barbatum that bloomed well last summer. Since it's supposed to
be a dry winter/deciduous plant I reduced watering this fall to induce the
dormancy. The response was to stop growing the leaves and throw out another
bloom stem. The inflorescence has been slow growing but is now ready to
bloom. They leaves haven't grown any since last fall. I just got into
growing a number of Catasetums and Cycnoches last year so I don't have a lot
of experience with them. The greatest lesson, I suppose, is to expect the
unexpected at least until the plant has been through several years with you.
My Clowesia Grace Dunn has been with me for about 9 or 10 years now and goes
dormant like clockwork.
