''festival at the National Arboretum sponsored by the National Capital
Orchid Society.
Jason Makoto Fischer, one of the speakers...
...
in 1996, Jason's dad bred and registered a Phragmipedium orchid with a red
color... intense...
Following a tradition of naming orchid hybrids for family members and
friends, he named it "Phrag. Jason Fischer."

This hybrid went on to win over 75 awards, and is a favorite among orchid
growers... because of its... longevity and suitability for cross-breeding.
Mature plants have been known to produce spikes that flower for 11 months,
with flowers emerging sequentially, lasting two to three weeks, and then
falling off just as a new one is emerging.

... Jason's mom is Japanese and his dad American. He grew up among the
orchids that his dad was raising in the family greenhouses in Plymouth,
Minnesota.

At age five, Jason assumed that every kid had to earn his allowance by
re-potting orchids. By 14, he was in the lab doing his own cross-breeding
work.

Jason went on to study the Japanese language and culture, moved to Japan to
teach English, and eventually married there. When he later returned to the
U.S. to work in the family orchid business... in Minnesota, he focused on
developing markets for Japanese orchids in the United States and American
orchids in Japan.

... an orchid hybrid called "Hknsa. Lisa Hasegawa 'Victory.'"...
Lisa Hasegawa...
Her father is... Norito Hasegawa...

Dr. Hasegawa is a dentist, born in Los Angeles, who turned his
orchid-raising hobby into a lifetime adventure and business. Thirty years
ago, he founded Paphanatics, unLimited...

In the course of 30 years, Dr. Hasegawa has named hybrids after many of his
family members...

Given good care, [orchids]... can live on past their owners [Well, one
would hope so !!!]. Indeed, there are plants alive today that were first
collected two centuries ago [could you name some of them ?], and some
wills include clauses for disposition of the dear departed's orchids."
