David [Janvrin] posted a most interesting comment about fragrance judging.

Fragrance is certainly one aspect of orchidology that deserves being
studied by serious orchidophiles.
Biologists analyze orchid fragrances to identify species and study how they
have diversified.

Could someone provide the precise reference to that article ?

That is interesting that one would associate a particular species to a perfume.
When a new perfume is released commercially, one often reads that it
contains an orchid note : which species (more or less 30 000) or hybrid
(more or less 120 000) was used ?

Of course, when 'a vanilla note' or 'sharry baby orchid note' is mentioned
in the description of a perfume, we get the idea (smile...) !

Less informative are the mentions 'wild orchid', 'black orchid', 'white
orchid', 'purple cattleya orchid' and 'white cattleya orchid' notes.

Few books but many articles are available : for example,

DAMON, Anne A. and CRUZ-LOPEZ, L.
2006 'Fragrance in relation to pollination of Oncidium
sphacelatum and Trichocentrum oerstedii in the Soconusco region of Chiapas,
Mexico' in Selbyana, Vol.27, no.2, pp.186 - 194.

CHEN, Zhilin
2006 'Hai to Haraenopsis, new breeding direction seeks fragrance
by crossing Haraella with Phalaenopsis' in Phalaenopsis, Vol.15, no.3, p.13.

GERLACH, Guenter:
2005 'Pollination and fragrances in the tribe Maxillarieae' in
Proceedings of the 18th World Orchid Conference, March 2005, 2005, pp.578 -
