Frikkie,

The first hybrid to flower was Calanthe Dominii (sometimes spelled Dominyi),
however, Rolfe says "He (Mr. Dominy) is said to have commenced with the
genus Cattleya, but the first hybrid which reached the flowering stage was
Calanthe Dominii...". This is the plant, that upon viewing it, Lindley
exclaimed "Why, you will drive the botanists mad!" The next hybrid to flower
was Cattleya Hybrida flowering in 1859. A much more detailed account can be
found in Volume 1 (1893) of the Orchid Review.
