Subject: [OGD] Cymbidium dayanum dark red form - varietal/clonal name?

Dear Eric,

This is definitely the red form of Cymbidium dayanum.
At one stage it was known as Cymbidium angustifolium - a name coined by Ames &
Schweinfurth.
This form occurs principally in Borneo, although the plants seen down the Malay
Peninsula exhibit more red than the more northerly populations, and the plants
of the Philippines. Because of this continual variation over the distribution,
it seems to be impossible to decide where one variety would stop and the next
start, and for this reason, this form has not been given a
varietal/subspecific/form name.
Lovely picture, I have found it difficult to photograph well, probably because
auto-focus has a problem reading dark red.

Regards,
greig russell
