"FOUR sites in the North have made a nationwide list of the most important
plant habitats in the country...
They were among 150 UK sites named by the charity Plantlife, established by
a team of botanists... in 1989.

The areas are the Berwick coast, the River Tweed and Holy Island in
Northumberland, as well as the Lake District in Cumbria.

... Lindisfarne is... home to... rare orchids. There are 10 different types
of orchid on the island... like the coral root and the marsh helleborine...

Rarer... is an orchid unique to Holy Island and designated a species in its
own right...
The Lindisfarne Helleborine...
It only exists within two hectares on the island...

Victoria Chester, chief executive for Plantlife, described the thinking
behind the list: "Publishing and promoting this list of plant diversity
hotspots around the UK will help focus decision-making on conservation at a
larger scale, instead of solely focusing on sites rich in one or two species."
