Hello all, The "uy" combination in my surname is pronounced "ui" which seems to be one of the most difficult diphthongs for non-Dutch speakers. I searched the Internet and found some interesting stuff:
- the diphthong "ui" sounds a bit like the last part of the French word fauteuil (webpage http://bulbulovo.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html) - or better still listen to the second name pronounced in the Brouwer - Kuiper - Escher - Zeeman - Lorentz sequence: http://homepage.mac.com/schuffelen/Dutch/Brouwer.MP3 (webpage http://homepage.mac.com/schuffelen/dureq.html) Now add the sound from Kuiper after the "br" and the rest should be fairly easy. Have fun :-) Kenneth. PS: don't pronounce the second part as "nix" but more like "lynx" with the "l" substituted by the letter "n" PS2: concerning the orchid name...
