I grow my paphs in a CHC mix (CHC, charcoal, sphag, and either lava rock or expanded shale). I get excellent growth of my paphs, regardless of type. I water frequently (3-4 times weekly in summer), and expose most of my multi-florals to cattleya light. I don't know what the bleaching you are experiencing could be from, but I do know that CHC has a tendency to retain salts, so requires rinsing thoroughly before using, frequent flushing, and repotting regularly.
