Born in Japan in 1935... came to the United States in 1961 to participate 
in a Farm Bureau agricultural training program.

He returned to Japan, but came back to the U.S. a few months later, worked 
for a nursery and eventually bought 50 acres in Salinas to grow 
chrysanthemums.

Matsui did relatively well growing mums until competition from South 
America threatened the business. At that point, he switched to potted 
orchids...

he created a foundation that awards $10,000 scholarships to college-bound 
Central Coast students"
