"Susie Turner has spent the past 10 years building up her own business -
delivering scheduled orchid arrangements to her core of clients and her
interior plant design services.

... she says... "I hand-select every single orchid from my growers and my
orchids are really fresh, just starting to open and last longer than most,"
she says. "Florists specialize in cut flowers, but I specialize in orchids."

It was while she was working in her former job as buyer for interior plants
for Smith & Hawken that she discovered her passion for orchids... "It was
immediate,"... "I bought orchids for all the stores and within six months,
I was a goner!"

Since then, she's worked privately with clients, coming up with orchid
arrangements or choosing interior plants in their homes. "When I worked at
Smith & Hawken, I was just a buyer but once I started handling orchids,
finding out their quirks and learning which ones are long-lasting, my
creative side just blossomed."

Now, she's opened Green Door Design, a small shop... where she sells...
single orchid plants and multiple orchids in arrangements...

Over the years, she's honed her choices to those that are hardiest, most
resilient and pest-resistant and last for years. She charges $65 an hour
for a home or office visit to assess the light, discuss preferences, make
recommendations and install the plants.

She also teaches clients her simple techniques to water and fertilize the
new plants and offers a once-a-month watering system for even easier care.

"I'm a minimalist," she insists. "I like one or two orchid arrangements
maybe in the entry and the great room, along with one big structural plant.
I also like a big plant in the master bedroom and orchids in the bathroom.
They bring wonderful energy to a space and help clean the air."

For those who need help getting their orchids to re-bloom or "re-spike,"
she offers an exchange program for dormant orchids whether purchased from
her or not. She'll repot it or send it to her greenhouse for re-spiking or
donate it to San Francisco's nonprofit Orchidmania for its experts to
re-spike."
