"The Soroa Orchid Garden... Pinar del Rio province, presents a desolate
scene after being battered by hurricane Gustav.

... harbored 700 species...
destroyed by wind gusts that reached 300 kilometers an hour.

The colonial house built by the previous owner Tomas Felipe Camacho also
suffered the fury of Gustav, which reached category four in the Saffir
Simpson scale.

In spite of the devastation caused by the storm the main collection of
orchids survived, assures... Ernesto Mujica, explaining that 400 varieties
make up the main heritage of the locality.

However... 60 percent of the species that existed in the open and highly
valuable plants were lost.

Now the priority is to care for the flowers in installations that lost
their covering and suffer the effects of direct sunlight.

Another objective is to rebuild the orchid garden constructed in 1943"
