Although I can't answer your question (Orient will need to do this), I can say that I make sure both exports and backups are done on a schedule. As you said, exports don't lock and that's critical in a high availability environment. Backups lock and depending on the database size, that can be a long time. I also do my own "exports" of critical data in a different format. I almost always restore from my exports. The regular exports are usually too large and unnecessary and the backups often can't be used due to upgrades (although I haven't really done it in awhile... maybe they are much more stable).
What I've been meaning to do is have a much better full backup strategy where the db is clustered and I take one instance offline to perform a backup and have it rejoin the cluster.
