A basket maker recently mentioned using a pasta-making machine to cut scrap paper, photographs, etc into long even-width strips for basket making. (She keeps an eye out for the machines at garage sales and Freecycle.)
I tried it with my old noodle-maker on a piece of recycled printer paper, 11 inch long and cut to 8 inch wide. I folded the paper in half lengthwise to make a double layer, 4 inches wide, the widest my machine could take. ( Mine looks something like this http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/imperia-pasta-machine/) I cranked it through about halfway at the narrowest setting -- angel hair pasta -- and stopped. Then I pulled out the paper very carefully to preserve the strips as a long fringe. It's easy to imagine all kinds of decorative uses for the technique.
