I'll give it a try. Tension in the paper (non-CMC and foil) comes from the paper tending to revert back to its original form. In flat folding, tension is partly relieved by hard creasing (and the model takes an intended 3-D form) or tension remains but the form is retained by locking folds. In 3D straight crease models, the form can also be retained by locking folds. Models with couplets or flanges as Dr Robert Lang calls them retain their forms. Each couplet has an intrinsic straight and an intrinsic curved crease. Tension remains but the couplets are rigid.
