I folded Eupatorus gracilicornis by Dao Cuong
Quyet from 50 hours of Origami. The construction is that of a corner
graft. Extra paper that comes along with the graft is folded in at step
8. This portion of paper not only adds nothing to the final model but is
a big bother as it makes paper unnecessarily thick for two legs. Things
become much easier if this extra paper is cutoff leaving only a small
portion to keep the corner graft in place. Final model is better
looking. There are many such instaces where part of the paper is folded
in and is never used. As I am not a purist about square paper I cut off
this extra paper and fold the model. Question is if I bring such a model
for display at one of Origami exhibitions will it be accepted as true
Origami or get rejected for having cut off extra paper?. And to be
honest are such models really from square paper?
One big advantage for square paper is from
suppliers point of view. As origami paper is not readily available in
India we buy white paper with good folding quality in bulk, print it on
one side with suitable colors and then cut it into squares. Square is
most suitable for cutting on professional machines. Moreover, there is
no problem about which size to cut. As a folder can easily use a
somewhat different size square and get the same result.
