I’m honoured to write the forward to the first monograph of the origami work of Gen Hagiwara. Although I’ve never met him, I’m already familiar with Gen’s elegant work: I’m always on the look-out for interesting designs, and I spotted his work several years ago. In fact, I was so taken by the elephant when I first saw it in 2009, that I attempted to fold it from a crease pattern. That was all that was available at that time. Unfortunately I failed…

You won’t fail, thanks to Gen’s excellent step diagrams, and all the work in this book is very achievable. That’s not to say that your folding skills will not be taxed: there are some tricky manipulations, but patience and a little knowledge will guide you through. The clean results you’ll obtain may belie the ingenious structures hidden within, and this is one of the pleasures of folding from a book such as this.

Gen Hagiwara’s origami work always displays strong forms and clean lines, as he portrays lively animals full of character. These qualities are typical in the best origami artists. So this is a book well worthy to be the latest in Nicolas Terry’s marvellous Passion Origami series.

Thank you, Gen, for enriching our origami world with your delightful designs. Folders: I know you’re going to enjoy this book!

Dave Brill
