I'm a huge fan of JEdit. It's an excellent editor and has all the hooks you need to customize it to your liking. It uses JPython for scripting, which is a truely cool thing (TM). ;) I also recommend the BufferTabs and XML plugins. It's open-source and entirely Java-based.
