My experience so far has been that the SuSE 8.1 installation went pretty far, but the roadblocks were big (upgrade qt3, perl-Qt workarounds, etc.). SuSE 8.2 ran into big roadblocks right away (c.f. the bugs on SF 773913, 773906, 773911), but I don't think they will be extremely difficult problems to fix. Either way, I don't think SuSE support will exist in 2.3. I may be wrong though...

Jeff,

My feeling is to go with the latest if this is the first outing. No
sense setting up any more support issues that you need to by supporting
old SuSE versions from the start. If we had tons of people and time to
burn...

-----Original Message----- From: Jeff Squyres [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 7:03 AM To: OSCAR development Subject: [Oscar-devel] SuSE 8.1 or 8.2?

So I got modules and switcher working under both SuSE 8.1 and 8.2
(thanks
again, Rich!).

LAM/MPI works fine on SuSE 8.2.

However, the LAM RPM's require a newer version of glibc than is on SuSE
8.1. I can easily build LAM RPM's for SuSE 8.1, but the question that
comes to mind is: why bother?

If this is the first SuSE release for OSCAR, shouldn't we start off with
the most recent stuff (8.2)?

I don't have strong feelings either way -- I'm happy to build another
LAM
RPM, but wanted to see what the group thought of this issue.
