I was just thinking, yum does exactly this very nicely already.. local
and remote repos, package updates.. it is possible that we can use yum,
or something like it, to run the remote repository? Or is this code
already working pretty well with the step 0 in the current wizard?

So much to do... yet so little time!!!

I like the download optional tarball idea.. but it would be
really sweet
if it was something more like, download a tarball of just the
platform
you are running on?
No sense pulling down mandrivia packages for a RHEL4
cluster.. although,
the marginal savings on bandwidth might not be worth it when
we look at
how many people are using this option..

I think he's talking about the non-core packages... we can...
- ship future tarballs with core packages only
- have user then d/l all the optional "included" packages
via OPD or...
- grab a tarball with all the remaining "included" packages
etc...
Cheers,
Bernard

I'd suspect there should be a easy way to setup a local repository,
which you could populate from a download of a net repository?
use some
sort of FTP mirror program?
Definitly something that would need to be documented though.

Being in the situation where I use few of the optional

agree that the tarball is a bit bloated. However, we need a
mechanism
that allows package updates both online and offline.
As my clusters don't have access to the Internet, I need a
simple method
to grab the additional packages I use and add them to
OSCAR. This also
usually means I need to grab the packages with a Windows
system and then
transfer the packages to CD or upload them to the cluster.

I guess really, you need the pre-reqs, even the core
packages can be
downloaded "just in time".
I'll let other developers pitch in their thoughts. My
concern is that
the tarball is continuing to grow and it may become too
bloated for us
to manage in the future.

Hi OSCAR-devel,
Sorry to sort of butt-in...
I've been wondering why more packages aren't in the step 0
aditional
packages, rather then in the growing tarball?
What about using the tarball to distribute only really core
things, and
have everything else downloadable just in-time, or for
the user to
mirror for their arch locally (by a script?)
From a purely bandwidth-related point fo view, I would
really like to
see this happen - it takes us over 36 hours to get an
OSCAR tarball
down to Cape Town... There are certain packages that we can do
without, and would only add them just-in-time as you say,
when users
clamour. What is the minimum of packages that _have_ to be bundled
with the trunk ?
Thanks
Bruce
