Bernard,
There are a number of features of C3 that we do not use in OSCAR. One of
these is the fact that you can run commands across multiple clusters
simultaneously, and for the same low-low price you can do this without
being connected to the headnode...yes that's right friends you can do it
all with only a SSH connection the cluster(s). ;)
So basically, what happens (from memory) you can do indirect operations,
where another system roughly acts as a proxy. However, as these commands
are getting passed around they have to know where to get at the C3 tools
when they land on a system. Previously this was done using a very simple
and pretty resonable (IMHO) assumption that the tools lived in
/opt/c3-MAJOR_VER (e.g., /opt/c3-4). Later an EnvVar was added to move
the C3_HOME (not sure about name) to other non-standard locations but it
isn't widely used.
So, I guess my point is that I can think of one reason not to move it and
would have to have a good reason to fix something that IMHO isn't really
broken. I agree that it is somewhat inconvient to not have it in path on
the first time you do an install, but I would imagine most folks should
only be in this boat once in a while -- developers are in that boat far
more than normal users of OSCAR b/c they spend their days (and nights)
re-installing oscar for testing. I could be wrong on this but that's my
general inclination.
Again, I may be convinced otherwise but for now my feeling is to leave it
alone. If there is a resounding opinion to move it I guess that could be
arranged. :D

Hi Thomas:
Can you please elaborate what you mean by "multi cluster installs"?
Thanks,
Bernard

Subject: Re: [Oscar-devel] C3 tools install to /usr/bin ?
Bernard,
This is partly due to some assumptions in C3 for multi
cluster installs.
That is the default, and we don't have override with ENV
setting. Also,
'/opt' is where we typically install OSCAR software, AFAIK.
Is there a problem with having it the way it is currently?

I can understand why you might want to have multiple
versions of LAM/MPI, but I'd think you would always want the
latest and greatest c3 tools. Is there a reason why they are
not installed to /usr/bin where the binaries are then readily
available (no need to set up any special PATHs)?
Cheers,
