Well, your cleanup actually broke some things besides fixing the problems I
added by replacing "echo" with "@echo" right before checkin (which is a bad
thing to do :-( ). FYI: "(" and ")" have some real impact inside makefiles
and shells.

So did you check that you had a repository prepared correctly? I guess this
failed _before_ and what we're seeing is the error resulting from that.

Yes, that should fix things.
Actually you should be using "make dist", that is much safer (and the more
important component). "make install" will be built on top of that. Guess this
will come within the next hour or two.
