I think it makes more sense to use gfortran. g77 isn't actively supported any more and dropped out of the gcc-4 source.
Putting this into the base prereq makes sense. Deleting the compat-g77 would make sense. The gcc-fortran packages should be an explicit dependency of the mpich or lam package, this way we force its installation on the clients, too.
