How about we put the gfortran dependency in config.xml for all the parallel libraries for now (for SUSE Linux)?  We can add them into the RPM spec file for future revisions (we'll have to file a bug on this so we don't forget...)

I think it makes more sense to use gfortran. g77 isn't actively supported any
more and dropped out of the gcc-4 source.

Putting this into the base prereq makes sense. Deleting the compat-g77 would
make sense. The gcc-fortran packages should be an explicit dependency of the
mpich or lam package, this way we force its installation on the clients, too.
