Title: Re: [Oscar-devel] SOC(oscarlive) The Test LiveCD with the GNOME DEis ready!!!
Hi Ravindra:

I agree with Erich, you probably shouldn't worry too much about the distro - I guess just choose whichever one works best for you.  If you started with ScientificLinux and is quite comfortable with it, I'd say go for it.

I just have one comment regarding the kernel - I would not go with 2.6.17.  The reason is the SystemImager version we plan to ship with OSCAR 5.0 is still based on 2.6.16.5 and I am afraid that certain hardware will be detected to use different modules depending on which version of kernel you're using.  This is potentially problematic and you'll need to look into using UYOK.  I am not sure if you have the time to look into this.  Just thought I'd like you know in advance.

So using whatever is standard with SL is fine, or perhaps go with 2.6.16.5.

Good luck with your project!

Cheers,

Bernard

Subject: Re: [Oscar-devel] SOC(oscarlive) The Test LiveCD with the GNOME DEis ready!!!

Hi Ravindra,

as far as I understand, the live-cd currently doesn't contain OSCAR, right?
Do you think you'll be able to fit OSCAR and an image to the liveCD?

What concept will you use for the client nodes? Will they use a special
OSCAR-Client-LiveCD? As opposed to the OSCAR-Master-LiveCD? In that case
Client's won't need to be installed.

Or will the LiveCD provide the client installation image? In that case I guess
you should rather think of a liveDVD... For that case, you might want to have
a look at the vmware OSCAR appliance at
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/341
This case is for really installing the client nodes (and erasing their
disks!!!). This can make sense if somebody wants to quickly test a cluster
software.

In any case, you need a liveCD for the Master Node which won't try creating a
client image in the master's RAM-disk.

Regarding the used distro, I don't really care and believe that you should
not care too much, either. LiveCDs are usually for quickly trying out some
features of the software, and OSCAR should have the same features on every
distro.

Best regards,
Erich
