Both use NFSv3 but server is under Fedora Core 5 with latest updates while 
clients are all Fedora 7. I recall having this problem with mixed exports 
several years ago while on kernel 2.4 but it was since then fixed. Perhaps, a 
regression in Fedora 7 kernel or specific incompatibility in Fedora Core 5 
kernel? Fixed it for now by removing 'ro' option in /etc/fstab, this way it 
sort of mounts everything rw by default but server still won't allow writing 
to directories exported read-only.

RedHat/Fedora is also notorious for adding undocumented options to NFS 
configuration via /etc/sysconfug/nfs file, it always took me ages to find 
what they actually do. Setting up NFSv4 is especially tricky...
