To follow up for the web archives: Daniel and I iterated off the list a
bit -- this was my fault. cexec was sitting there waiting for input
because switcher asked a confirmation "Are you sure you want to do this?"
kind of question. Using the following works just fine:
cexec switcher mpi = mpich-1.2.4 --system --force
because switcher will not ask for confirmation.
This set a valid MPI implementation, and all other functionality was
restored.
