Don't forget that this same symptom comes up if /home is not mounted.

oscartst`, but that doesn't solve the underlying problem (since the node
in question won't accept the password anyway).  One of your nodes is up
but not responding.  You can try to do a manual sync_users, so that the
nodes all get an updated passwd file (among others).  Can you ssh to the
node as root?  If so, then sync'ing should fix the problem.
