David, Jeff & I ran into similar problems the other day while testing 1.4b10, after some add/del node action. Gist of it was, the user "oscartst" wasn't in the newly built node's passwd (b/c the node only got what was in the image) so a manual 'sync_users' got everything up to speed.
Same thing Jason said but thought I'd comment a bit b/c we ran into it on Wed. too.
