You could just install over the installation in /opt. However, it is also
possible to install another version of MPICH (and put it just about
anywhere you want). If you want switcher to work, I would recommend not
installing it with prefix=/usr or /usr/local. Otherwise, you should be
good to go.

The only chance that I'm aware of is setting prefix to /opt/mpich instead
of the default. So, if you already know how to

Yes, it needs to be installed on all the nodes. You can do this in a
couple of ways. putting it in /home will certainly work. You could also
build an RPM and push the RPM out to all the nodes using the cpush / cexec
tools.

Yes - switcher is actually pretty simple - it just has a couple of config
files. If you look in /opt/switcher (I believe - I'm away from a OSCAR
cluster right now), you should see a file for LAM and MPICH. It should be
pretty straight-forward to add another MPI (so you could pick either
Portland-compiled MPICH or GNU-compiled MPICH).

If you have any questions about any of this, let me know.

Hope this helps,

Brian
