This is possible, as OSCAR uses SMP kernels by default on all compute nodes, whether they are SMP or not. (the overhead on a UP system is negligible) The only caveat is the kernel on the head node. Because it is installed by the OS installer and not OSCAR, it will end up with a UP kernel if it is a UP machine. This can create problems with OSCAR packages which build kernel modules against it, and subsequently try to use that module on some SMP node. (GM and PVFS packages are vulnerable here)
You have three options to avoid this problem:
1) Use an SMP box for a head node.
2) Manually change the head node to use an SMP kernel prior to installing OSCAR
3) Manually change the rpmlists used to build to compute nodes so that they don't use an SMP kernel.

I recommend Option 1 for your case. Option 3 is obviously not a good choice for your situation, because some of your nodes ARE SMP, and you'd like to take advantage of that.

Hi all

I'm just starting out building a small OSCAR cluster from Dell workstations and RH9. My question is can I mix single and dual processor workstations as compute nodes in the same cluster, or is this not possible under OSCAR?

Many thanks
