Maybe there is an issue with permissions on ~/.ssh/ but please understand that
I typed the password wrong in the part you commented on:

Again I would like to shift the focus to the lines that contain "mkstemp" and
"rsync error" in the excerpt from step 7 below.  Can you please comment
specifically on what might be causing that?  Is it permissions on ~/.ssh/ or
could it be something else?
