Actually, we try quite hard to provide good help messages (aside from the horrid one I mentioned previously :-\). The output from "mpirun -h" provides several examples with explanations of what each of the <where> clauses are run, etc. The man page goes into even more detail.
Since those two messages (mpirun(1) and "mpirun -h") are probably the most frequently read by users, we vetted them through a *lot* of users -- both experienced LAM users and total novices -- to reach the text that is currently there.
If you have specific suggestions or places where the text is not clear, I'd love to hear them.
