Also check "dmesg" and /var/log/messages - some times you can find info about disk errors there.

nope, nothing wierd there :

Right... first I guess I  would have to find out what make disks we
have in there (Gareth ?) and get the appropriate checker. Anyway, I'm
almost certain now it's hardware...
