Hi Jeff: We are currently in the process of implementing a new feature such that we can make use of Package Groups (as defined by Red Hat or Fedora via comps.xml). That way, the .rpmlist for OSCAR can be much simplier, because you can just define the list with groups instead of separate RPMs.
When that feature is in place, all you need to do is have @Everything in the .rpmlist and everything is good to go. We plan to implement this for 5.0, but no promises as of yet. You mentioned that you have problems installing packages into the chroot, generally this works - perhaps you can post your error messages and we can see if we can troubleshoot that?
