Perhaps I was thinking of something else...

According to this page:
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/mpiexec.1.html

it is present in LAM/MPI, but is more or less a wrapper for mpirun
itself.  I assume it is probably present in MPICH and OpenMPI as well.
