This sort of sounds like how openMosix works (I think). I don't know if you can migrate a shell process, but I believe process migration/distribution is what openMosix excels at. Might be worth checking out. --Joe

I wonder if Kerighed could be configured to do that? I have never been super sure how a single system image cluster works, if it only offloads from the head node if it is too busy, or if it tries to use the "compute nodes" by preference. I have a feeling this kind of setup would be more what you have in mind though. It makes the cluster more like one very large shared memory machine. OSCAR is set up by default to run MPI (or serial) programs via a batch scheduler like Torque or Sun Grid Engine. There are some cluster aware compilers around I know, but I am not familiar with them besides knowing some exist. Depending on what your researchers are doing that might be sufficient....
