Joseph,
I would suggest you to take a look at the format for the hosts file. Here's
a link to the manpage for /etc/hosts - http://linux.die.net/man/5/hosts
and also the OSCAR network setup documentation at
http://svn.oscar.openclustergroup.org/trac/oscar/wiki/InstallGuideNetwork
Your /etc/hosts still looks wrong. It should read something like
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain <http://localhost.ucmerced.edu/> localhost
10.0.0.2 madrid.ucmerced.edu oscar_server oscar_server
