David, You will have to execute the mkinitrd command in a chroot environment. Several emails have been posted lately regarding that specific point and i do not know enough of the PS3 configuration to give you the exact command to execute.
I just modified OSCAR-6.x so this is done automatically but this is not available in OSCAR-5.x.
