Judging by how many Malaysian IT companies have made it to the
international stage, looks like many people don't understand how to
generate money from proprietary software either :)

Don't think the problem is with how to generating money with FOSS.

I think the problem is a lack of plain good old entrepreneurship and
long term focus. There are no quick paths to riches in the world: to
use MySQL as an example again, they started in 1983. Most companies
(with a few exceptions) take a long time to be successful - why should
software companies be any different?
