I would like to disagree on this part. There is no need for them to get themselves updated with the latest programming languages or trend. Even if they teach COBOL and PASCAL in school today, I think that is something very good. It is not about teaching them how to use the language to develop software, it's about teaching them the concept.
We have too many coders today who know how to write software, but fail miserably when it comes to quality. Why? Because when they started to learn programming, they learned how to build software with the programming language rather than the science behinds it.
