Laser Powered Paper Plane Takes Flight
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/2154216

[0]RobertTaylor writes: "[1]Ananova is reporting that Japanese
scientists have developed a laser powered paper plane. A blast of light
from a commercial laser heats up a droplet of acrylic polymer or water
on its surface which acts as fuel. Full story [2]here" Nature also has
    a [3]story on this advance.

Can Superconductors Block Gravitational Fields?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/171213

[0]jswitte writes "Raymond Chiao, of the University of California at
Berkel, believes that superconductors can [1]convert electromagnetic
radiation into gravitational radiation. His [2]full paper can be found
here. His theory is based on the idea that superconductors might be
able to block the so-called 'gravitomagnetic' field just as they block
the electomagnetic field in the famous Meissner effect allowing
superconductors to levitate in magnetic fields. He claims that when he
'adds the gravitomagnetic field to the standard quantum equations for
superconductivity, he confirms not only the gravitational Meissner-like
effect but also a coupling between the two breeds of magnetic field. An
ordinary magnetic field sets electrons in motion near the surface of a
superconductor. Those electrons carry mass, and so their motion
    generates a gravitomagnetic field.'"

Freecharge Windup Mobile Phone Power Source
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/2140252

[0]Harry Morgan writes: "The UK's Guardian newspaper has an interesting
article in it's [1]Online Supplement concerning [2]Freeplay's handheld,
windup mobile phone power supply the [3]Freecharge. Although larger and
heavier than several spare batteries, it has two distinct advantages
over the former, you don't have to turn the phone off to connect it and
it will never go flat a long as your arms work!"

Slashback: Gopherectomy, Portacinema, Disunity
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/1453232

Slashback tonight with a quartet of updates. So, read on for more
information on portable video viewing (and instant recording!), United
Linux and one analysts view of What it All Means, Microsoft's answer to
a Gopher hole, and why easily guessed passwords sometimes save the day.

Information Valuation - The Most Buck for the Bits?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/2150217

[0]Rational asks: "I've heard of Everquest accounts sold for upwards of
a thousand dollars... Considering that what is actually for sale is
just an username and password, which generally comes up to less than 20
bytes in total, this amounts to over $50 per byte. What are the most
expensive pieces of information that you have heard of, in dollars per
byte? Perhaps satellite pictures? The Human genome?"

Pro/Engineer Coming to Linux
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/2043248

    [0]PotatoHead writes " [1]Parametric Technologies Corporation (PTC)
announced in a [2]recent press release, a Linux port of their flagship
modeling product Pro Engineer. HP will be the preferred partner for the
Linux platform release. This is pretty big news for the engineering and
product design crowd folks. There must be some fairly credible requests
coming in for this to happen."

Unix Shell-Scripting Malware
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/209249

sheriff_p writes: "[0]Virus Bulletin are running an article on [1]Unix
shell scripting malware, citing a 'zeitgeist' of interest in *nix
malware following the release of [2]{Win32/Linux}/Simile.D. The article
looks at possible infection methods, possible actions the virus could

Spoofing P2P Networks as Marketing Plot
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/1852237

[0]prostoalex writes "Salon's technology section [1]talks about major
music labels spoofing the peer-to-peer networks. The users of
AudioGalaxy, Gnutella or KaZaa have probably seen a surge of fake MP3
files when conducting a search on a popular title. The MP3 looks legit,
but contains a 20 second clip played over and over. Such promotional
tracks were especially popular with newest releases, such as Eminem and
No Doubt, as pointed out in the article. Who posted the fake tracks to
the p2p networks? Could it be, as Salon suggests, a suburban mom, who
does not agree with controversial lyrics, or would it be the label,
trying to prevent piracy and promote the new album at the same time?"

Partial Solar Eclipse Tonight

grouchomarxist writes "There is going to be a [0]partial solar eclipse
tonight. It will mainly be visible by people in the southwest of the
United States. People in Mexico will have the best view, there it will
approach a full eclipse." [1]Space.com has a nice page on it too. Enjoy

ADTI Whitepaper Released
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/1737258

Dave Wreski Writes: "This [0]PDF article, written by [1]Kenneth Brown
of ADTI, attempts to explain that "Open source GPL use by government
agencies could easily become a nation security concern. Government use
of software in the public domain is exceptionally risky." The paper has
been taken down since this reader submitted the link -- they promise to
replace it by the end of the day -- but as of right now, it's still
available [2]here. Their accompanying [3]press release is out too. You
might remember that we ran a story on this whitepaper [4]earlier. At
the time, [5]a CNET story said that it was going to link open-source to
terrorism; it does so in a glancing reference on p. 8 to the FAA and
"national security." But the thrust of the paper is "GPL bad,
open-source good," coincidentally Microsoft's position, as was
hinted-at in [6]NewsForge's interview last week. In case they take the
second copy of the paper down, we'll include some teaser quotes for you
below. Update by HeUnique:The Register got some nice [7]critique about
    this paper.

Software.linux.com
webCDwriter
http://software.linux.com/articles/view/1480/

Like many of you, I've got roommates. We're networked to share files
and an Internet connection. Here's the problem, we've got only one
CD-writer between us. Now, there's no reason that we shouldn't all have
access to that little piece of hardware. No reason at all.
