Linux at Industrial Light and Magic
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/12/0242202

[0]Nicholas DePetrillo writes "Linux Journal has a [1]big story about
how LINUX is being used in hollywood, specificly at Industrial Light
and Magic with some GREAT screenshots and a very descriptive article
with [2]configuration details." Word has it that their rendering farms
have gotten even bigger since this article was published.

Selling Your (MMORPG) Soul
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/2342227

[0]Gnpatton writes: "Here is an [1] article about the recent ruling in
the [2]Blacksnow/Mythic case. It talks about the EULA (End User Licence
Agreement, that thing that you never read) and about how this case
might affect the rest of the software industry, not just with game
companies. From now on, you might just want to read the EULA before you
    click 'accept'."

How Yoda Became an Action Star
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/2131204

[0]fexter writes: "This article at Entertainment Weekly talks about
    [1]Yoda's transformation from a puppet to a completely-CG character,
and talks about the animators' horror at Lucas' transformation of Yoda:
'When Coleman and crew first saw them, they were appalled. They thought
it was unseemly and undignified for Yoda to bounce through the fight
like a Superball loose in a toy store.'"

Neverwinter Nights is Gold
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/2213225

Urthpaw writes "[0]Neverwinter Nights, the [1]D&D based RPG from [2]
BioWare (Makers of [3]Baldur's Gate among other titles), for Windows,
MacOS and Linux has [4] Gone gold. The game allows players to make
their own "modules", or adventures, and DM them for up to 64 friends.
Server-linking features allow the assembly of distributed MMORPGs."

Lawrence Livermore Lab On The Chopping Block?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/2014232

[0]guttentag writes "[1]According to the San Francisco Chronicle,
Bush's Homeland Security plan calls for transferring $1.2 billion of
    [2]Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's $1.5 billion budget to a
new Department of Homeland Security under Tom Ridge. However, the plan
transfers only 4 percent of the lab's employees. Ridge's explanation of
the numbers: "I cannot give you the kind of explanation you need to
deal with that imbalance." LLNL funded and [3]houses the [4]ASCI White
supercomputer, among other cool projects." While Livermore has an
impressive [5]research record, we would miss most the [6]laser lab from
    [7]Tron.

Terapin Mine Review
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/2013252

[0]Ian Bell writes: "Designtechnica has just posted a review of the
Terapin Mine. This handheld device has a 10gb hard drive, ethernet
port, PCMCIA port, USB 2.0 and a front display. On top of all this it
has a Linux OS installed complete with scandisk and defrag. You can
hook this unit up to your television to view pictures as well. I know
that the stats on this unit sound great, but you would be surprised by
just how usable it is. [1]Click Here for the full review." Whether it's
10 or 20 gigs (the review mentions both figures) doesn't really affect
    the reviewer's conclusion.

UCSD Students Tracking Their Friends' Locations

An Anonymous Coward writes: "The location-tracking software, developed
by a 15-year-old student at the university, draws upon triangulation
technology. The PDAs figure out their locations by comparing the
strength levels of signals traveling from the devices to various Wi-Fi
antennas. No GPS Required. [0]Article from Salon here..."

Hollow Optical Fibres Can Now Process Signals
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/11/1850235

[0]Ami_Chan writes: "According to [1]Nature, researchers at [2]Bell
Labs have created a new type of optical fibre. This fibre is hollow,
and can be tuned to different wavelengths of light using 'plugs of
fluid' and temperature changes within the fibre. This allows the fibres
to process signals as well as transmit them. The [3]full article is

Satellite Radio - XM vs. Sirius?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/10/2247236

[0]wizman asks: "I am getting a new car tonight and will be upgrading
the audio system. Now that satellite radio is available in most markets
and becoming more affordable, I am definitely planning to take the
    plunge. Unfortunately, the 2 providers -- [1]XM and [2]Sirius -- both
seem to have just as many strengths as weaknesses. There is a three
dollar price difference, which is really not a concern for me."

Countries Ponder: GNU/Linux vs. Microsoft

koody writes: "IDG has an overview of how many [0]countries are getting
drawn into the debate over the relative merits of using open source
software rather than Microsoft Corp.'s Windows applications. Seems like
many countries would be slowly moving towards the open source
community, while a few still pledge allegiance to Microsoft."

I'm the last person to be lecturing anyone about getting organized. But
I'm sick of being the only youngster in my family to remember things
like Father's Day. Well, that's gotta stop. So when I sent dad our
gift, I downloaded , for my forgetful siblings!
