CD Copying Kiosks Endorsed in Australia
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/048232

Iron Sun writes: "While the story is somewhat misleading in stating
that the plan legalises piracy, CD copying kiosks have been [0]given
the go ahead here in Australia. It will be interesting to see what the
Australian Recording Industry Association says about this. Supposedly
the plan involves royalty payments to ARIA, but where artists stand is
    not discussed."

New Open Video Codec From Xiph/On2
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/0041248

[0]xercist writes: "[1]Xiph.org, the bringers of the mighty [2]Vorbis
codec, have [3]done it again. The patents on [4]On2's VP3 video codec
have been effectively neutered, and it is being released under the BSD
license for all to enjoy. The combination of VP3 video and Vorbis audio
(in an OGG bitstream, of course) will be called Theora, and will soon
take over the world. The ETA to a 1.0 release is approximately one
year. You can also read an [5]interview with Emmett Plant (Xiph CEO)
here. The official press release will be up tomorrow, so don't complain
about lack of mention on xiph.org just yet."

Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/23/2248236

[0]jalefkowit writes: "[1]Launch is reporting that [2]Moby explains the
recent slide in sales for his newest album, "[3]18", by describing what
he calls the 'Pearl Jam Effect': bands and artists with more tech-savvy
fans sell fewer albums than those with less tech-savvy fans, as the
techies will disproportionately get their copies of the album from
friends with CD burners or P2P services rather than from record stores.
What do you think, are we putting our favorite bands in a bind?"

'White Box' Makers Take Up The Slack
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/23/1848218

n3hat writes: "[0]This story in the business section of the Baltimore
Sun points out that the 'pooter bidness isn't as bad as the
publicly-traded companies report. Seems that as much as 45% of systems
are assembled by screwdriver shops and other white-box makers, not the

Microsoft's 'Palladium' Privacy/DRM Scheme

Paradox Jack writes: "according to [0]this article at MSNBC, Microsoft
has an ambitious new plan called Palladium to rework computer and
internet security. This includes changes in hardware, digital rights
management (on all sides), and far more. Now, who thinks this will

Printing Chips
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/23/1530209

[0]batty writes :"Nature has this article about a process that uses a
quartz die and a laser to [1]mechanically print features onto chips
instead of photo-etching them. The article mentions engraving a silicon
wafer with features only 10 nanometres in size, as opposed to 130
nanometres using photlithography, and the process is quicker, simpler,
and more environmentally friendly than current processes. Which is
    nice."

MAME Ported to (Chipped) Xbox
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/23/1441236

[0]metallik writes: "A version of [1]MAME for the Xbox game console
[2]has just been released. This release will only run on Xbox consoles
equipped with a mod chip. MAME is the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator,
one of the more successful open source projects out there. It emulates
over 3800 arcade machines, from Space Invaders to Mortal Kombat III,
many of them perfectly. This is probably only the first of many such PC
software projects to be ported to modded Xboxes. At $199 (plus
modchip), the Xbox will soon be an extremely attractive set-top box (if
not for the reasons Microsoft wanted it to be...)" A while ago, we
posted about getting MAME to run [3]on a developer-kit Xbox, but since
mod chips are now available, this sounds like a more practical
approach. Update: 06/23 18:40 GMT by [4]T: Note: Thanks to Santeri
Saarimaa for a note that the project is [5]now hosted here instead.
