Slashdot
Just How Much Privacy Do We Have?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/2013218

[0]stuffman64 writes: "[1]Popular Science is running an [2]excellent
article on just how private our daily lives are. The article chronicles
a typical day of a make-believe Graphics Designer from Chicago.
Throughout his day, he unwittingly supplies companies with information
that can potentially be used against him. And with [3]GPS-enabled cell
phones just starting to hit the market, our privacy can only continue
to deteriorate from here. A must read."

Proposed Law To Open Code ... In Cars
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/25/0156226

[0]SEWilco writes: "A Minneapolis [1]Star Tribune story points out that
small repair shops say they lose money because they don't have access
to car computer codes. These 'codes' are the diagnostic messages used
by onboard computers to report problems and perform tests. Older
designs only required a jumper wire to make a test light flash code
patterns, certain dashboard actions to display codes, or a cheap
display terminal from a parts store. Now the interfaces and code
meanings are more complex and undocumented, so only auto dealer repair
shops can easily find causes of some problems. U.S. [2]Senate S.2617
and [3]House H. R. 2735 would force auto manufacturers to share the
codes. [4]Sen. Wellstone says that manufacturers are acting like a
cartel, blocking independent shops and car owners. But GM is being
    helpful."

Slashback: OpenSSH, Bio, Timeliness
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/1912215

Welcome to Slashback, with updates (below) on a handful of recent
Slashdot posts. Most importantly, a message regarding OpenSSH 3.3 could
save your system from attack -- read it; you might need to pass the
word on to your vendor, too.

Wireless Network or Weird Al?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/2027220

[0]coronaride writes "[1]This article over on [2]Wired discusses the
current topic of the FCC's regulation of UHF's (ultra-high
frequencies). Apparently, UHF channels 52 through 69 are in danger of
being taken over by wireless networking!" Insert your Conan the
Librarian or Wheel of Fish joke here.

Biometrics, Ownership and Privacy?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/1814213

[0]symbolic asks: "I just finished watching a small segment of World
Business Review on PBS, where the topic of discussion the use of
biometrics by employers to not only provide confirmation of identity,
but as something to drive other parts of the operation - like tracking
employee time. Briefly mentioned were face and iris scans, but as I was
watching a picture of someone's iris, I realized that once an employer
has captured a scan of your iris (or any biometric data), who has
control over it? Does it become part of the cesspool of information
trading that occurs between business and government entities? Will
trading of someone's biometric information become as ubiquitous as
their address or phone number. Is there any reason we should be
concerned about this? I'd like to hear what others think about this."
Ask Slashdot has previously approached the Biometrics topic for
[1]technical issues, but the privacy issue of such data has yet to be
addressed. How do you feel about biometric data (or any data derived
from your physical makeup, like your genome) being used as another
commodity (like your address) in the corporate data exchange?

Russia Poised to Restrict Net Activities
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/206246

DigitalHammer writes: "The Russian Parliament is planning to place
[0]off- and online restrictions to curb pro-Nazi and anti-religious
activities. Former Reds are afraid they will be labeled as extremists,
while envirnomentalists and human rights groups complain that the
proposed restrictions will halt free speech in
communist-turned-democratic Russia. Deja vu, I see? News.com has the
    story."

Guide To Designing Low Power Handhelds
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/1436217

[0]randomErr writes "[1]iAppliance had a nifty article about designing
handhelds. As the state-of-the-art in low-power CPUs races forward, the
CPU becomes one of the most critical components in the design of a
handheld. New CPUs such as Intel's XScale, Alchemy Semiconductor's
Au1000, and Transmeta's Crusoe provide the ability to scale clock
frequency and voltage dynamically. As power consumption varies linearly
with clock speed and as the square of core voltage, you'll want to have
hardware hooks to be able to adjust both clock speed and voltage as
    necessary, based on device performance."

Red Hat Dissolves eCos Team, Changes Embedded Strategy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/158250

Anonymous Coward writes "This [0]article at LinuxDevices.com, which
includes an Interview with Red Hat CTO Michael Tiemann, probes Red
Hat's dissolution of its [1]eCos project team and the reasoning behind
Red Hat's newly adjusted embedded linux strategy. Tiemann says his
company is still in the embedded business, but considers embedded to be
an aspect of a broader [2]'platform OS' strategy."

Ransom Love's Answers About UnitedLinux
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/24/1556244

We posted your [0]questions for Ransom Love, Caldera's CEO, on June 10.
Here are his answers, which ought to clear up a few things about what
[1]UnitedLinux is doing, along with some discussion of Linux advances
and how to (hopefully) make money selling Linux services and support.
This is one of the best "CEO interviews" we've ever posted, with lots
of straight answers and hardly any buzzwords or marketspeak. Lots of
good insight about the "business of Linux" here.
