Ballmer Admits 'Linux Changed Our Game'
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/17/0235244

[0]wackybrit writes: "We've all known Linux has got Microsoft all
worried, but they've always denied it. On Monday at a conference in LA,
however, Steve Ballmer (of Microsoft) [1]confessed that the FUD
surrounding Linux isn't quite what it was made out to be. The Register
has also [2]covered the story in an easier to read fashion. They point
out that Microsoft has just changed a [3]page on their site which
originally derided Linux, but now simply states what 'Windows does
    better.'"

Weta Digital's Render Farm Upgrade
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/1253244

Headspace2 writes "Weta Digital (The graphics company behing LOtR
computer effects) has just purchased [0] 220 2.2GHz dual Xenon
machines, each with 4GB of ram, to add to their current render wall of
350 1 Ghz P3 systems. They have also placed an order for another 256
Xenon servers. And it's all running Linux. My favorite quote is 'it is
thought the server farm will be the most powerful processing site in
the Southern Hemisphere'. They should use that in the FotR ad
campaign... 'Rendered using the most powerful processing site in the
southern hemisphere' Congrats the guys that get to play with all those
    clock cycles. Make more movies.

Moxi Functions In Charter Set-top Box Next Year
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/221252

An anonymous reader writes: "Charter Communications will offer a
Moxi-like cable tv set top box with DVR / MP3 capabilities next year.
[0]Here it is. I like the idea of merging the set-top box with a DVR
using normal cable tv or satellite. A good combination."

Contracts Contracts Contracts
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/185250

An anonymous reader submits: "There's an article over at CNet about all
those [0]software contracts that are out there, and what to watch for
before signing the dotted line. Using California's $95 million Oracle
problem, they define what the general terms are that get used in
software procurement and support contracts. While mostly geared at
commercial software, one can use most of this article to target open
    source tech support contracts."

Ziggy Stardust 30th Anniversary
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/1634203

[0]jonerik writes "Any short list of influential rock albums of the
'70s is likely to include [1]David Bowie's [2]'The Rise and Fall of
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,' the story of a futuristic
alien rock star and his demise during the Earth's final years.
Originally released in June 1972, Ziggy is celebrating his 30th
anniversary this year in fine style. First of all, the album is being
reissued today in [3]a limited edition 2-CD set. Secondly, the 1983
documentary, 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,' directed by
filmmaker [4]D.A. Pennebaker ('Don't Look Back,' 'Monterey Pop') is
being re-released this month and [5]John Cameron Mitchell has [6]an
interesting interview with Pennebaker about the re-release in this
    week's [7]Village Voice."

Mono and .NET - An Interview
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/1813221

[0]all-of-the-dot writes "Would you use an open-source implementation
of the .NET Framework? Ximian's Mono project enables you to build .NET
apps that run on Linux and Unix as well as Windows. Check out the story
from [1].NET Magazine's interview with Miguel de Icaza, Ximian
cofounder and CTO" Added to which, AirLace writes "The [2]Mono project
has [3]just achieved full self-hosting on Linux. While the C# compiler,
itself written in C#, has been [4]able to compile itself since March,
Mono can now compile its own complete set of class libraries too. This
announcement closely follows the release of the [5]Phonic media player,
the first .NET application for the GNOME desktop."

Where are the 'Construction Set' Games?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/1727256

mbishop asks: "After reading an [0]the article on games decreasing
brain activity, I thought back through childhood to when there were an
abundance of '[1]construction set' games. I owe much of my music
education to 'Music Construction Set'. These games were unique in that
you could not only save a creation, but you could compile it into a
standalone program that someone else could play even if they didn't
have the original software. Creation was very easy, no programming
necessary, and fun. My guess is that these sorts of games do much to
increase the brain activity of the player. What are the 'Construction
Set' games of today? Is there still a market for them?"

Microsoft in Peru, Living Room
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/16/168213

Two pieces of Microsoft news today. [0]tfofurn writes "According to
[1]this AP quickie and [2]this Reuters story, both on Yahoo, Microsoft
is donating 'about $550,000 in money, software and consulting services
to the Peruvian government for educational and "e-government"
initiatives' to Peru. The AP story mentions the conflict of this with
Edgar Villanueva's proposal to have the government use only open source
software. Villanueva ([3]/. interview), you may recall, [3]wrote a
famous letter to MS Peru a few months ago." And many people have
submitted stories about [4]Windows XP Media Center, coming [5]this
winter to a living room near you.

Lazy Solitaire
http://software.linux.com/articles/view/1524/

OK, it's definitely Wednesday when you can't even manage to finish a
game of solitaire. That's when you know that hump day has arrived and
is living up to its name. Well, now even that unfinished game of cards
can be completed without you needing to give it a second thought. Yep,
minimal effort's required in this game of solitaire.
